Nashville Chemistry Olympiad Information

The Nashville Section sponsors a local competition as part of the National Chemistry Olympiad. The Local Section Competition takes place in March of each year and serves to select the ten students from the Nashville Section that will compete in the Chemistry Olympiad National Competition in April.

2024 US Chemistry Olympiad Competition Information

For the 2024 Local Section Competition of the Chemistry Olympiad, student must have registered through ACS to participate by January 26, 2024. High school teachers with students registered have been contacted. Individual high school teachers will be responsible for proctoring the local section exam for their students between March 1-20, 2024. All student answer sheets must be scanned and sent to the Nashville Section Chemistry Olympiad coordinator by March 22 so they can be sent to ACS for grading. The Local Section Competition will not include a lab component this year.

National Exam: Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Tennessee Tech University

Students qualifying for the national exam will be contacted by the Chemistry Olympiad coordinator regarding their nomination and participation in the national exam.

The National exam includes three parts:

  • Part 1- Problem Solving
    • 60 question multiple choice exam covering broad chemistry topics (90 minutes)
  • Part 2- Problem Solving
    • 8 question free response, written exam covering chemical theories and models (105 minutes)
  • Part 3- Lab Practical
    • 2 laboratory practicals involving problem solving in the laboratory (90 minutes)
